Truman complained that only two speakers the whole week had praised him.

Then he was left waiting until 2 a.m. to give his acceptance address. To add insult to injury, the convention planners botched the one thing they planned to celebrate his nomination.

At this convention, the first to be televised, doves were placed in a box on stage to be freed to fly toward the ceiling on Truman's nomination. The box was under the hot television lights and in the steamy convention hall for 13 hours.

When the lid was lifted, most of the birds were dead. I'm trying to find this fine line between being engaged in my work and defining my identity through my work. The last time I worked in a store, that was what I did, who I was, and it caught me off guard when the store closed. Who was I then? Now, I've got a second shot, another chance to build the store that I want, a store that'll work, but I don't want to lose myself in it.

I'm picking away at it. It's a little frustrating because I'm only responsible for part of the store, and I don't really approve of some of the things my superior is doing. I think signs handwritten in Sharpie are barely acceptable for a produce department-- shelf tags handwritten in Sharpie are not acceptable for the grocery department. It makes us look sloppy, unprofessional. I really want us to look professional. It wouldn't take much, but my boss doesn't see it the same way that I do.

She gave me three departments to oversee: Frozen; Dairy; and Bulk. Frozen and Bulk are difficult departments to run, with all of the work in and out of the freezer, and the lifting of the bulk bins. Did I mention that I hurt my shoulder somehow? I'm trying to type this with an ice pack strapped across it. Agitating the bulk bins might have something to do with it.

I've been breaking the Frozen and Dairy departments into smaller sections, and have been focusing on fine tuning each section. Dairy is specially tricky, because the products are so perishable. You have to order conservatively, but if you order too light then you sell out. It's really tricky right now as we try and grow the store, with the sales trends changing each week. Soy yogurt doesn't sell, and I have to throw a bunch out, then it suddenly sells out, then it sits on the shelf again.

The freezers are easier to work, because the products last longer. Product is moving out of the freezers, which is a good sign for the store in general, because people don't tend to buy frozen foods unless they're buying groceries in general. A frozen bag of peas is not an impulse item. I'm bringing in some new products, and it's neat to see them move.

The lack of professionalism really frustrates me, though. My boss has this thing about filling in holes on the shelf. She doesn't want to see holes on the shelf, thinks it looks bad, and I can see that, but she fills in these holes by giving extra facings to the products on either side of the holes. After spending hours facing shelves in stores, it drives me insane to see misfaced products and know that they've been intentionally misfaced.

Yeah, having holes on the shelf doesn't look good, but we're a new store, struggling to make ends meet. We can't order all of the backstock that we'd like each week. Right now, a hole means a product sold out. A hole is something we should focus on for ordering next week, trying to find the right balance to keep that product filled without having too much backstock. A hole forces you to pay attention to it all week, until you get it filled. Covering it up just messes up the shelves, makes more work for everyone else. It looks sloppy and unprofessional, and I think a grocery store has to look somewhat professional, and by professional, I don't mean slick and polished, I don't mean all the employees are wearing shirts and ties. I mean that the people running the store seem to know what they're doing. I think as a customer, if you don't feel that the management knows what they are doing, you're not going to trust that store. I think for most people, it's important to trust their grocery store.

'Bizarro World' - The Boston Globe

'Bizarro World' - The Boston Globe:"Day left his hometown of Lynn in 1979 to move to Fairfield, Iowa, so he could study transcendental meditation at the Maharishi School of Management. Two years later, he opened an arcade in nearby Ottumwa and called it Twin Galaxies. One day, someone got a very high score on the game Defender, which involves flying a spaceship over a mountain range and shooting down aliens. The score was so much higher than any other Defender score in Day's arcade that he set out to learn if it was the highest score ever achieved on Defender. After calls to the game manufacturer went nowhere, Day decided to start his own record-keeping organization. On February 9, 1982, the Twin Galaxies National Scoreboard was launched and was quickly recognized by the manufacturers and gaming publications – and eventually the Guinness Book of World Records – as the authority on video game and pinball records."

Yoghurt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yoghurt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:"Until the 1900s, yoghurt was a staple in diets of the South Asian, Central Asian, Western Asian, South Eastern European and Central European regions. The Russian biologist Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov had an unproven hypothesis that regular consumption of yoghurt was responsible for the unusually long lifespans of Bulgarian peasants. Believing Lactobacillus to be essential for good health, Mechnikov worked to popularise yoghurt as a foodstuff throughout Europe. It fell to a Sephardic Jewish entrepreneur named Isaac Carasso to industrialise the production of yoghurt. In 1919, Carasso, who was from Salonika, started a small yoghurt business in Barcelona and named the business Danone ("little Daniel") after his son. Carasso emigrated to the United States during World War II and set up a business in New York City under an Americanised version of the name: Dannon. Yoghurt with added fruit jam was invented to protect yoghurt from decay. It was patented in 1933 by the Radlická Mlékárna dairy in Prague, and introduced to the United States in 1947, by Dannon."

08-17-08_1746.jpg

 08-17-08_1746.jpg
Originally uploaded by Kiyote23.
Thank you for using easyedgeSM Picture Messaging by U.S. Cellular.
